Ray Davies Kinks songwriter and musician interview; Tamzin Sylvester asking question SOT- Another thing that it cites in the press release is the incredible influence that you have had on generations of music makers a lot of people cite you as an influence Oasis, Pete Townshend (lead guitarist of rock band The Who), what do you think your legacy is?Ray Davies interview continues SOT- I don't know / We were like a garage band, we did it for fun / The Kinks even at the height of our powers we played music because we enjoyed it, and as a writer I'm a Saturday morning writer, Saturday mornings in particular because you don't have to go to school the next day / And that's the principle I use with my writing / It's something I do as a hobby as well / If it wasn't my hobby we'd never have been completely successful / We had periods of really bad sales and picked it up again / We've never really been consistently successful / When you're in that situation you do it because you like it you don't do it because of the pay cheque / It wasn't for companies like BMI and PRS in particular in the UK, we were in lots of law battles when we started out and our royalties were held up and that was our only way of earning money really because of the royalties coming in from some of the songs / So they've done us good service over the years and like I said it's because of the enjoyment, and I think that transfers into the music / We're not trying to be great / I'm not a matinee idol, never have been, never intended to be, it was in in the music, and bands picked up on that aspect of our playing / Just some original sounding garage band
