Doctor found guilty of trading in live organs; ITN ENGLAND: London: GIR Ex SCOTLAND: Edinburgh: INT John Forsyth (British Transplantation Society) interviewed SOT - Don't want to comment on particular case / Many bodies have looked at ways we can increase numbers of organ donors, there is no one easy fix, there needs to be a raft of measures - around publicity, education, review of law, looking at new ways of living donation / Donor rate in UK is 13 donors per million, rate in Spain is over 30 per million - Ethical objection - likely to be power gradiant between recipient & donor, organs likely to move from young to old, from women to men, as already happens, & from poor to rich - most people find that distasteful / As surgeon, operating on donor is different from any other operation I do, fact that is gift of love - if it were paid donation that would sully it - Easy to say that, regulated market sounds fine, but it's likely that payments would differ - poor of developing world might end up in transplant tourism, poor of developing world acting as reservoir for elderly of developed world
