GOBLET CELLS--MUCUS SECRETING CELLS, SIMPLE COLUMNAR EPITHELIUM, Small Intestine, Human, 350X. This image shows columnar absorbtive cells (specialized in absorbing nutrients from the food in the small intestine) and three goblet cells with mucus (a lubricant) that is secreted into the lumen of the small intestine (the middle cell was secreting mucus). The tall columnar cells show a striated border (composed of microvilli seen with an electron microscope), and desmosomes that help "weld" the cells to one another.
