NAIROBI, KENYA - 2024/02/28: Waste collectors offloading waste products from a garbage truck at the Dandora dumping site. The Dandora dumping site in Nairobi is Africa's largest open-air landfill. Established in 1975 and spanning 30 acres, it receives around 850 tons of solid waste from across Nairobi daily. Waste pickers, often residents, depend on the site for income through the recycling of materials like plastic, glass bottles, and metal products. However, the practice of burning waste at the site contributes to climate emissions, adversely impacting the health and well-being of the residents in the area.
