Jessie Preciado (cq) performs the swordfish dance. Chumash dancers and storytellers gathered Sunday for a Hutash Festival in Ventura at San Miguel Chapel site, 125 W. Thompson Blvd. In Chumash lore, Hutash is the Earth goddess who created the Chumash people. According to the legend, when the Chumash were crossing from the Channel Islands to the mainland, some fell into the ocean, and Hutash saved them from drowning by turning them into dolphins. Each September, the Chumash people honor Hutash with a harvest festival named after her. Donations benefited the Candelaria American Indian Council. Another oportunity to see native culture and dance locally at 1st Annual Intertribal PowWow at California State University Channel Islands in Camarillo October 4 and 5, 2003 , Blessing of the Bikes will be at 5 PM on Saturday and 3 PM on Sunday at the HUB parking lot.
