Amid Gaza Electricity Cuts, Tailor Uses Bicycle-Powered Sewing Machine To Make Do And Mend

RAFAH, GAZA - DECEMBER 30: Hassan Samih Dawla, a 45-year-old tailor displaced from northern Gaza, provides tailoring services using a bicycle-powered sewing machine on December 30, 2023 in Rafah, Gaza. Dawla, who is originally from the Beach camp near Gaza City and has been in the sewing profession for 25 years, created a sewing machine that could run on bicycle power instead of electricity to cope with the frequent power outages that have followed the outbreak of war in October. Tens of thousands of Gaza residents have fled to the territory’s southernmost city of Rafah in recent weeks after fighting intensified in Khan Yunis, following an expansion of Israel’s ground campaign. According to Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry, more than 21,500 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed in Israel’s retaliatory war launched after the October 7 Hamas attacks. Amid the widespread displacement caused by the war, 93 per cent of 2.3 million Gazans are "acutely food insecure," according to the World Food Programme. (Photo by Ahmad Hasaballah/Getty Images)
