Buddhist Monks Holding Protest Signs

(Original Caption) Buddhist monks on the verge of rebellion are adding to the mounting troubles of the South Vietnam government. Already locked in a fight for survival with Communist guerillas, the regime of President Ngo Dinh Diem has been threatened with a "militant struggle" by Buddhists is it does not respond favorably to their current non-violent campaign for religious tolerance. Buddhist leaders claim that the government is guilty of religious discrimination against members of their faith. The President himself, a Roman Catholic, is the principal target of Buddhist complaints. Here, Buddhist monks hold up bilingual signs of protest at the famed Xa Loi Pagoda in Saigon.
