Turkish TV Dramas See Export Boom

In recent years Turkey has become a TV-exporting powerhouse, with foreign syndication of Turkish TV shows generating more than 350 million in 2018, according to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Its shows air in over 100 countries and are watched by more than 400 million people, with major markets in the Middle East and Latin America, where Turkish dramas have started to displace telenovelas as top-rated programming. In Chile, for example, the most-watched program of 2014 was a Turkish series called "1,001 Nights." While Turkey still trails the US and UK in foreign syndication sales, it aims to hit $1 billion in TV-show exports by 2023, according to country's Radio and Television Broadcasters Union.
