US Asylum seekers – the daily few who are called from the waiting list – Tijuana, Mexico

TIJUANA, MEXICO – NOVEMBER 19, 2018: TIJUANA, MEXICO – NOVEMBER 19, 2018: Those standing adjacent to the white steel bars are the ones whose names have been called from the US asylum request waiting list. Every morning US asylum seekers gather at the San Ysidro Port of Entry (also known as El Chaparral) in Tijuana and to request their names to be put on the US asylum seekers waiting list (aka ‘La Lista’). Thus, upon placement they receive a number and are advised to return in four weeks and to be mindful of their waiting list number. Those whose numbers are called are then given the opportunity to justify their asylum case before US authorities. The San Ysidro Port of Entry is near the Benito Juarez sports complex in Tijuana, Mexico which is serving as an emergency shelter to house thousands of Central Americans Caravan Migrants - the majority from Honduras.
