Romania Promotes Tourism To Boost Economy

CRISTIAN, ROMANIA - MARCH 10: An inscription in German reads: "Stop wanderer, stop, go slowly here, how you are now, we once were, how we are now, you will once become, to follow us, prepare yourself well" over a portal next to the fortified Saxon church on March 10, 2013 in Cristian, Romania. Cristian, in German called Neustadt, dates its history back to the 13th century with the settlement of German-speaking Saxon immigrants. Today the Saxon region of Transylvania in south-central Romania, with its fortified towns and churches, is a strong tourist attraction, though a majority of the Saxon descendants have emigrated since 1989. Both Romania and Bulgaria have been members of the European Union since 2007 and restrictions on their citizens' right to work within the EU are scheduled to end by the end of this year. However Germany's interior minister announced recently that he would veto the two countries' entry into the Schengen Agreement, which would not affect labour rights but would prevent passport-free travel.
