Liberal Party Conference: third day; ENGLAND: Merseyside: Southport: INT Jo Grimond (Joseph Grimond) (Leader, Liberal Party) speech SOF - There is a generation growing up in this country who don't revere any party, these are some of the people we have to win for liberalism, every year five or ten per cent of new votes come on to register, I think political parties sometimes forget that ... There are the rising technicians, scientists, artisans, a class who certainly aren't sorry but equally are not trade union fodder of the old type / Two shots delegates / Grimond speech SOF - And we're winning support all over the country, London, Torquay ... and up into the Scottish borders and the highlands, but I say again I am certainly under no delusion these people are not necessarily Liberal, and they are no more going to automatically support the Liberal Party than they do the Conservative or Labour Party, they have got to be convinced and I don't think they are going to be convinced by any gimmick of which this government is so fond ... / Wide shot stage / Grimond speech SOF - Nor by the old politicians' technique of praying on their fears and prejudices - I think class war and all that is dying and rightly so, I think they are to be won by arguments addressed to their intelligence [applause] and by some call to their idealism ... / Wide shot Grimond on stage / T/X 21.9.57 / 10pm
