The photo shows Daikoku-do, where God of Wealth is enshrined. Shitenno-ji Temple in Osaka is one of the oldest temples in Japan and the first temple to be administered by the state. The temple was founded in 593 by Prince Shotoku (572-622), who introduced Buddhism to Japan. The temple is the Headquarters of Washu sect of Buddhism. Although the temple buildings were burned down several times throughout the temple’s history, including during the Second World War, they were always reconstructed to reflect their original design. There is a beautiful Japanese garden in the precinct called Gokuraku-jodo (Paradise) Garden, which was laid out in the early Edo period (1603-1868), based on an idea of the Western Paradise of the Amida Buddha, with ponds, rocks, waterfalls, cherry and maple trees, irises and stone lanterns.
