In April 1989, a minor incident on the Senegal-Mauritania border led to violent xenophobic riots in both countries, including looting, an imposed curfew, and a state of emergency declared in the Senegalese capital city of Dakar. Both countries deported thousands of the other's citizens, killing hundreds in the process, the border was closed, and diplomatic relations were broken off for a year until April 1992.
