Water-splashing straw men march as sooty deities during UNESCO-recognized festival in Miyagi Prefecture

Video footage taken on Feb. 2 shows bare-skinned men, sheathed in unusual straw outfits and with their faces smeared with soot, marching through the streets of Tome, Miyagi Prefecture during the Yonekawa no Mizukaburi water-splashing festival. The event is one of several festivals celebrating visiting deities held in Japan that were jointly added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list last year. It was the first time for the event to be held after gaining the body’s recognition.
