This historic railway terminus is one of the city's most celebrated architectural pieces. Designed by the renowned Portuguese architect José Marques da Silva, the granite building, completed and officially inaugurated in 1916, features a distinct French Beaux-Arts and Neoclassical-inspired style. The station holds a fascinating history, having been constructed on the ruins of the 16th-century Convent of São Bento de Avé-Maria, which was demolished to make way for this symbol of 20th-century progress.
