The history of the matchstick began with the discovery of the chemical element phosphorus in 1669 by Henning Brandt, but the invention of safety matches is attributed to John Walker in 1827. Early versions were dangerous and spontaneously ignited, being improved with the "safety match" in 1844 by Johan Edvard Lundstrom, who separated the flammable components between the matchstick and the box.
