A garland of “papel picado” is shown. Papel picado, which translates to punched or perforated paper, are banners used for decoration for Dia de los Muertos celebrations. The vibrantly colored garlands with punched patterns are typically placed around the edges of “ofrendas,” or altars of loved ones who have passed away. On the ground below the papel picado are petals of marigold flowers. Marigolds are believed to attract the souls of the dead to the ofrendas prepared for them.
