It caused unprecedented flooding, with Cockermouth being particularly badly hit after both the Cocker and Derwent burst their banks. The main street was 5 feet underwater and £millions worth of damage was caused. Here cars are driving through floodwater in Ambleside when Lake windermere broke its banks and spilled over onto the road.
