Liver cancer. Coloured axial computed tomography (CT) scan through the abdomen of an 80-year-old man with cancer of the liver. The liver is at centre left. The cancer is the red area at lower left within the liver, with another cancerous area at upper centre. This cancer is a hepatocellular carcinoma. Cancer cells divide in an uncontrolled fashion and migrate to invade other tissues. Treatment is with surgery if the cancer is still localised, and chemotherapy and radiotherapy if it has spread. This patient's liver is also cirrhotic, with long-term damage due to cirrhosis.
