Cypress knees are woody structures that form above the roots of cypress trees. Some scientists believe that these projections help stabilize the trees on the soft soil and they may also help in the oxygenation of the roots. Taxodium distichum or Bald cypress trees are deciduous conifers in the family of Cupressaceae. They grow in the lowlands of Southeastern and Gulf Coast of the United States. The Cypress wood has been valued for it's water resistant quality. Also seen in photo is a single American Coot also known as Mud hen ((Fulica americana)
