Japanese Inflator Filefish Brachaluteres ulvarum is primarily associated with the waters of the Northwest Pacific around Japan, but it has been documented in Indonesian regions such as the Lembeh Strait in North Sulawesi usually in a depth range from 25 to 30m, this specimen slightly shallower near Flowerpot coral Goniopora sp. The secretive species inhabits bottoms with green seaweed on deep coastal slopes, usually among soft corals and feeds on algae and crabs.
