Frostfin Cardinalfish Ostorhinchus hoevenii (ex. Apogon hoevenii) occurs in the tropical Indo-West Pacific from India, Indochina and the Malay Archipelago, to northern Australia and to Japan in a depth range from 20 to 30m, max. total length 6cm. Adults form small schools in estuaries and sheltered bays with soft-bottom habitat. They are usually seen among sponges, crinoids, or Diadema urchins in weedy areas. It is a mouthbrooding species with distinct pairing during courtship and spawning. This specimen was encountered near a Flowerpot Coral Goniopora sp. in the Lembeh Strait, Indonesia 1°27'15.486 N 125°13'25.578 E at 14m It is noticeable that in the low-current and rather dark Lembeh Strait, some species are found at shallower depths than usual.
