Solenocaulon acalyx occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific from Madagascar to the Maldives, Indonesia, Australia, New Caledonia and Taiwan in a depth range from shallow to 40m. The branches are characteristically hollow and flattened at their tips, with polyp alignment along the edges. The polyps are usually white like these specimens, but can exhibit light pink or brown hues. Despite some literature suggesting nocturnal polyp activity, these are feeding in day time at 9 AM, protected under a ledge. This side of the gutter is bright, since it is covered with a very thin layer of coenenchyme, through which the white medulla shines.
