Short Brothers were founded in 1908, initially to build Wright Flyers under licence in Britain. Moore-Brabazon (1884-1964) was a pioneer aviator who made the first authenticated powered flight in Britain on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent, in 1909, and was the first person to be issued with a pilot�s licence in Britain. On 30th September 1909 flying a Short, he won a prize of £1000 offerred by the Daily Mail newspaper to the first aviator to successfully complete a 1 mile circular flight in an all-British aeroplane.
