Long of Louisiana began his legislative career in Washington, smashing two precedents by smoking in the Senate, which is forbidden, and by being escorted to the Vice President's desk to take oath by Minority Leader Robinson, instead of his colleague and political enemy Senator Broussard of Louisiana.
