The Volcanoes Of Calatrava (ciudad Real), Up To 350 Created Over A Period Of 7.5 Million Years

The project 'Calatrava Volcanoes Geopark: Ciudad Real', promoted by the Provincial Council of Ciudad Real, organizes during this autumn free guided walks through the province to publicize its past linked to historical volcanoes of Ciudad Real. Up to eleven guided tours allow to know the characteristics of the monogenic basaltic volcanic field with "the largest number" of volcanoes in the Iberian Peninsula. The Campo de Calatrava, with an extension of some 5,000 kilometres, is home to a complex geological system with 350 volcanoes that lie in the subsoil. Although the last eruption was recorded 5,000 years ago, and the chances of an eruption occurring, according to experts, are minimal, they do consider this network of volcanoes active.
