Police walking Down Stairs

(Original Caption) Trapped on the stairs between the sixth floor and the roof of a Harlem apartment house today, after he had shot a policeman, alleged drug-crazed gunmen, identified by police as Robert Ricks, held off 100 police for an hour until a final well timed fusillade of shots dropped him, mortally wounded. (In photo left) a detective carrying a tear-gas pistol and a patrolman armed with a submachine-gun and wearing a bulletproof vest, emerge from the apartment house after the battle. (in photo right)Police carry the critically wounded ricks out on a stretcher. He died 90 minutes later I Harlem hospital. the only words he spoke to police through the entire battle, the last words before the final gun blast was "Gotta die! I'm on the stuff!"
