The center of the famous town of beautiful towers is formed by two interconnecting piazze centered on a 1237 well. The tourist office says there are 14 towers inside the village where there were once 70-76 dating from the 13th century. The towers were built partly to defend against outside invaders but also as command centers for San Gimignano's warring families. It is known as a poster child for Italian hilltowns.
