A socialist housing project, Phnom Penh

[UNVERIFIED CONTENT] The white building or Patang how the locals call it, is on of the last slum areas in Phnom Penh city centre. It used to be filled with drug dealers, but the situation is getting better these days. It is still housing many prostitutes and their protectors. This decrepit structure on a bustling street is not far from the famous Mekong River is one of Phnom Penhs most notorious slums. The building was built in the 1960s, and consists of around 400 mainly one bedroom apartments. It was divided into six blocks, each with three or four floors, all connected with open staircases. During the rule of the Khmer Rouge, from 1975 to 1979, the people and businesses who had been housed there were forced to leave, and many ended up in the Kmere Rouge death camps. The people who returned, often in small groups, needed a place to stay in a city that had been abandoned for years. Now days around 3000 inhabitants live there, and many of those are honest and hard working people.
