Production Process of Yerba Mate

TAMANDUA, ARGENTINA - JULY: Tareferos, the rural workers who reaps the yerba mate from the shrubs, carries a sack with nearly 100 kg of newly harvested plants to be dried and processed on July, 2005 in Tamandua, Argentina. Around forty thousand people labor on the yerba harvest, more than a third of them illegal workers living in poor conditions. Workers get 15 Argentine pesos per ton, which represents half of the established by the Argentine law. Due to low wages, its common to see entire families engaged in the yerba mate production process; as it can take three days to pick one ton of leaves, men, women and children help each other to secure a minimum income to their family.
