US Soldiers Standing in Middle of The Cologne Cathedral

(Original Caption) U.S. soldiers stand in the interior of the great gothic cathedral of Cologne which escaped major damage in the devastating bombardment which preceded the fall of the major Rhine port to American first army forces on March 7th. The cathedral survived seven direct hits, all by light bombs. Most of the hits were near the nave and made gaping holes in the vaults of the ceiling, strewing the floor with rubble.
