J D Queensberry

circa 1882: Sir John Sholto Douglas Queensberry, 8th Marquis of Queensbury (1844 - 1900). A keen patron of boxing, he supervised the formulation of new rules to govern the sport in 1867, which came to be known as the 'Queensberry Rules' and included three minute rounds and the use of padded gloves. In 1895 he was tried and acquitted for libelling Oscar Wilde in a case which ultimately led to Wilde's imprisonment. Original Artwork: Engraving after photograph by Mayall.
