100th Anniversary Of First Aerial Crossing Of The South Atlantic

LISBON, PORTUGAL - APRIL 03: Portuguese Air Force F-16 fighters fly over the Tagus River during the ceremony commemorating the 100th anniversary of the first aerial crossing of the South Atlantic on April 03, 2022 in Lisbon, Portugal. Admiral Carlos Gago Coutinho and Commander Artur Sacadura Cabral left Lisbon at 7am on March 30, 1922, aboard the Lusitania, a British-made Fairey III D Mkll seaplane, the first of three that would be used in this crossing. Lusitania ended up suffering an accident when it was moored in a swell near the Penedos de São Pedro e São Paulo. A second seaplane, Patria, the Fairey Nr. 16, was sent aboard the Brazilian steamer Bagé, so that Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral could resume their journey. However, on the way from Fernão de Noronha to Penedos, on May 04, Patria's engine malfunctioned and the aviators were forced to make an emergency landing. A third aircraft, Fairey No. 17, Santa Cruz was sent aboard the Portuguese Navy's vessel Carvalho Araujo. It was aboard this seaplane that the two aviators arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on June 17, 1922. (Photo by Horacio Villalobos#Corbis/Corbis via Getty Images)
