U.N. Visit to Burundi
BUJUMBURA, BURUNDI - FEBURARY 19: Portraits along the banks of Lake Tangayika - the longest fresh water lake in the world and the deepest in Africa - in some places over 4,000 ft. The Democratic Republic of the Congo lies directly opposite less then 25 miles to the east. Was surprised to learn that the lake holds over 18% of the world's fresh available water. It was also here that in 1965, revolutionary freedom-fighter Che Guevara, used the shores of the lake to train guerrilla forces opposed to the oppressive Congolese government of the day. That plan though was quickly foiled as it was later found out that the US National Security Agency had been secretly monitoring him the entire time after he left Cuba in 1965.The NSA then aided the local government forces to ambush and kill the majority of the revolutionary force. Che Guevara managed to escape inland and eventually to Bolivia. The beaches here are now patrolled by Burundian military forces as many have fled the ethnic fighting and have crossed the lake from the neighboring DRC and Rwanda to the north.
