Marrakech In Mourning As Earthquake Leaves City In Ruins

An earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale hit central Morocco on September 8, with more than 3000 people confirmed dead and many unaccounted for as rescue operations struggle to reach the most affected areas. Whilst the epicentre was in a sparsely populated area of the High Atlas Mountains, its effects have been felt 71km away in Marrakesh, a major tourist destination, where many buildings have collapsed and thousands of deaths have been reported. According to people in the tourism industry, they have seen a steep decline in individual travelers sighting mass cancellations, however, group trips are still happening.
