Pilot Whales At Pelagos Sanctuary

The mammary glands of the female long-finned pilot whale are not external but are hidden in two small slits located on either side of the genital area. Cetaceans do not show muscles to suckle. It is the mother who ejects milk after receiving a pressure on the belly from the calf. This milk is much fatter than the one of land mammals, enabling a fast growth.
