Liu Xiaobo Nobel Peace Prize Laureate 2010

BEIJING, CHINA - APRIL 25, 2008: Liu Xiaobo sits in a restaurant in an undisclosed location April 25, 2008 in Beijing, China.Liu Xiaobo is the 2010 recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. He is a celebrated intellectual, who hurried home from University of Columbia in New York to join the 1989 struggle on Tiananmen Square. He joined the protesters on Tiananmen Square at a time when momentum was slowing down, but with his, and pop star Hou Dejian's, hunger strike thousands again flocked to the square. When asked if there was a saying, proverb in Chinese to describe how it is to be a dissident, Liu Xiaobo wrote this on a napkin: "Ca Bian Qiu", which means "an edge ball", for example, in table tennis. It refers to the constant game he has to play where he is as outspoken, as aggressive, as he can be without 'placing the ball on the wrong side of the line'. This is tricky he explains: "The law concerning what you can write and what you can't write is very muddy. Therefore no one ever knows precisely when he crosses the line. In this way, the authorities can take action any time." In December 2008 he was jailed again. This time he was the co-author of '08 Charter', a rare, outspoken document challenging the ruling Communist Party to grant greater freedom of expression and to hold free elections. Liu Xiaobo was a key drafter of Charter 08, a charter calling for more freedom of speech and democratic reforms. He was arrested in December 2008 and jailed for 11 years. (Reportage by Getty Images)
