African Migrants Ensnared By Human Traffickers En Route To Europe

LAGOS, NIGERIA - MARCH 20, 2018: Joy, a trafficking survivor from Cameroon who used a pseudonym, sits with her two-week-old daughter in a private shelter in Lagos, Nigeria. She was returned to Nigeria when she was eight months pregnant through the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), and gave birth in Nigeria. She was allowed to leave Libya on a flight organized by IOM and the Nigerian government as humanitarian workers feared for her safety and that of the unborn baby. According to Time magazine, the woman said the EU directive to curb migrant arrivals not only emboldens corrupt Libyans but also amplifies their deep-seated prejudice against black Africans. "The Libyans understood that if the EU doesn't want blacks to come, it means we are not valuable as humans," she tells Time.
