Mary Pickford in The Lonely Villa
(Original Caption) Here is a scene from one of Mary Pickford's first pictures, Biograph's, The Lonely Villa, which appeared in 1909. Mary, then 16, had been on the stage ten years when she decided to switch to the movies. The Biograph Girl, as she with the long blonde curls had come to be known, had a sensational rise in the films and soon won starring roles. In 1915 she became vice president of a film company, and the next year she formed her own company, in 1919, Mary joined Charlie Chaplin, D.W. Griffith, and Douglas Fairbanks to form United Artists.
