North Sinai Remains Tense

EL ARISH, EGYPT - SEPTEMBER 20: A group of young Egyptian bedouins walk through the village of Al Muqattah, in Egypt's restive North Sinai region, September 20, 2012. The village of Al Muqattah lies in Egypt's North Sinai desert, less than 10km from the Israel-Egypt border. The area is at the centre of 'Operation Eagle, an effort by Egyptian security forces, reportedly with the assistance of Israeli intelligence, to establish security in North Sinai and rid the area of Islamic militants held responsible for a series of cross-border attacks on both Egyptian and Israeli forces. These attacks include a raid on August 5, 2012 in which 16 Egyptian soldiers were killed and a stolen Egyptian Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) was driven through the border fence onto Israeli soil. Egypt's North Sinai region suffers from a chronic social and economic malaise, with unemployment affecting a significant proportion of the population. Local community leaders complain of a lack of infrastructure, claiming to have been ignored by Egypt's central government in Cairo for over a generation. (Photo by Ed Giles/Getty Images)
