GOMA, ZAIRE - 1994: A child orphaned during the 1994 Rwandan genocide is waiting for help in one of the refugee camps set up around the city of Goma, Zaire (now Democratic Republic of the Congo), on July 1994. The genocide perpetrated by the Hutu-dominated provisional Rwandan government on the Tutsi population left nearly one million children abandoned or orphaned, more than a million people dead and a displacement of another three million. Many children saw their family members tortured and murdered and half a million girls were raped.
