Indigenous protest action in Brazil

17 August 2020, Brazil, Novo Progresso: Members of the Kayapó indigenous people wearing protective masks stand at a blockade of the BR-163 highway, demonstrating against the poor health care in the fight against corona virus in indigenous settlements. However, the protest is also directed, among other things, against the lack of updating of a basic environmental plan and against the government's unwillingness to engage in talks during the concession procedures for a private initiative for the BR-163 motorway and during the planning for Ferrogrão, a project for the construction of a rail link between the states of Mato Grosso and Pará, which will run less than 50 kilometres from the Kayapós' territories.
