A 25 km tunnel will run from Acton in the west of London for over 25 km under central London down to Abbey Mills in the east. The aim of the Tideway Tunnel is to: - protect the ecology - reduce aesthetic pollution due to sewage-derived litter - protect the health of recreational water users - increase resilience to drought and floods - Reduce urban air pollution - improved urban biodiversity. The Tunnel will connect 34 of the most polluting combined sewer overflows and transfer the captured sewage to the Lee Tunnel for onward delivery to Beckton Sewage Treatment Works for treatment. The recycled clean water is then released into the River Thames.
