Aspiring Models Attend Cambodia's Sun Model School

PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA - MARCH 31: Students from the Sun Model agency are trained on the catwalk while fellow students look on during a training session at the school on March 31, 2014 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Having started in August 2010 with only three models, the Sun Model Agency and School is starting to make an impact in the fashion industry in Cambodia. Directed by a former model, Nimul Roat, the agency has trained more than 600 aspiring models since its opening, 250 of who have now become professional models. In 2013 alone, Sun Model models have participated in more than 100 shows, including in contests and shows in South Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand. After undergoing 2 hours of training per day, 5 days a week, aspiring models are typically ready to participate in modeling shows after a month and a half of training. Models for whom body shape and confidence are the only requirements start with Sun Model at the age of 15 and usually finish their careers at the age of 25 for women and 30 for men. In a country where the fashion industry is relatively new and where opportunities to pursue full-time professional modeling careers are still limited, most of the models have to take on second jobs in fields unrelated to modeling in order to make a living.
