During the time when the Shia laws prevailed in Kashmir,...

KASHMIR, INDIA - 2009/09/16: During the time when the Shia laws prevailed in Kashmir, girls didn't have access to education. Today, there are classrooms full of enthusiastic girls at the New Era public school. One of the most far-reaching and long-standing conflicts in the world has gone on with varying intensity since 1947. The problems arose in 1947 when India became independent, and would divide Kashmir between themselves and Pakistan. The local maharajah was a Hindu and chose to connect the land to India despite the fact that two thirds of the population was Muslims. The following year, 1948 war broke out between the countries. The result was that Kashmir was split into a Pakistani portion and an Indian part, and so it has remained ever since. A planned referendum would show who Kashmir belongs to, or whether it would be independent, but no referendum has not so far taken place, although the Pakistani policy requires so. In 1962, China also became part of the conflict, when war broke out between India and China and a fifth of Kashmir came to belong to China. 1989 militants supported by Pakistan began to carry out attacks in Kashmir - since then over 80 000 people have been killed in the conflict. Both India and Pakistan have built up its foreign policy on the Kashmir issue where prestige and pride both are important issues. All three countries involved are nuclear powers..
