Flora Day Celebrations Take Place In Helston

HELSTON, ENGLAND - MAY 08: A performer with the Hal-an-Tow pageant takes part in a performance as part of the Helston Flora Day celebrations on May 8, 2013 in Cornwall, England. The annual Flora Dance, also known as the Furry Dance, is one of the UK's oldest customs still practised today and is said to be a celebration of the passing of Winter and the arrival of Spring. A series of dances take place throughout the day, beginning at 7am, all over the Cornish town and even in and out of private houses and shops. However the highlight is the midday dance which was traditionally the dance of the gentry in the town and is why men still wear top hats and tails while the women dance in their finest dresses.
